GROWLING
OLD MEN:
Shuttle Diplomacy
"Breathing new life into old songs and tunes, these musicians approach their craft carefully, re-arranging, substituting chords and whatever else it is they do. It’s inspiration like this that enables them to achieve something very few can do; write new tunes that sound like they've been around for years and re-arrange traditional one's in a way that makes them as fresh sounding as they ever were. John and Ben’s gentle, laid back approach to Bluegrass and Old-Time music combined with Leon and Dom's smooth arrangements of Irish and American tunes is a match made in heaven!" Jawbone is the much anticipated, second release of this crazy, fun trio. Their debut recording, Big Twang, earned them the Indie Music Award's Best Americana CD of 2005. Jawbone, too, is a showcase of original and traditional vocals and instrumentals spanning genres of swing, old time, Celtic, old country and acoustic funk. Brother Mule in concert is a musical conversation between three of America’s most gifted acoustic musicians. The bandmates share the spotlight in a three-ringed circus of extraordinary talent and variety. Brian Wicklund ignites the stage with his fiery fiddling, Ben Winship plays tasty mandolin as he croons one of his finely crafted songs, while Eric Thorin pushes the boundaries of bass playing as an extreme sport. Playing music of yesterday and today like there's no tomorrow, Brother Mule is an acoustic power trio that defies categorization. The music is driven by Wicklund's stellar fiddle playing and Winship's song writing. With rock solid support in the all the frequencies below 100hz, the trio is backed on upright bass by Eric Thorin (of Open Road and Tony Furtado Band fame). This debut cd is a showcase of original and traditional music, vocal and instrumantal - ranging from swing and old time to Celtic, old country and acoustic funk. The trio is joined on select numbers by Mike Dowling (guitar), Jeff Newsom (harp), Marc Bru (percussion) and Ed Domer (snare).
"John and Ben's first Growling Old Men project is one of my all-time favorite recordings. I've listened to it dozens of times over the years and it always gives me a good feeling because my favorite kind of music is made by old friends on the back porch. Listening to Ben and John pick and sing together captures that feeling better than any other recording I've ever experienced. I was very excited when I heard that they were recording another project and I'll have to say that when I heard it, it exceeded all of my high expectations. These masters of the guitar, mandolin, and harmony vocals have continued to hone their craft over the years that have passed since the first recording. Their vocals are tighter and they speak to each other through their instruments with a smoothness, fluidity, and familiarity that magically occurs when musicians come to know each other so well they can read each other's mind." "Kane's
River is more than different - they're intelligent, original, versatile
and virtuostic. And they're simply among the very best modern bluegrass
bands out there."
Traditional and original
bluegrass songs, ballads and tunes performed in the "brother duet" tradition
on mandolin/guitar. John Lowell is a veteran of the Montana bluegrass
scene; formerly a member of Wheel Hoss and Loose Ties, he now plays
with Kain's River. Growling Old Men
is truly a joint effort, with the lead singing, songwriting and picking
duties shared throughout. Influenced equally by the music of the Appalachian
hills and the western plains, this offering is at once simple and powerful.
Matt Flinner added rhythm guitar on several cuts. CD Price: $15

One Shoe Left has a
little bit of everything; some new, some traditional, some raw, some
fully produced. Ben describes it as, "traditionally unconventional roots
music. I've tried to strike a balance between serious and humorous,
funky and old-timey, contemporary string band music and rural blues."
Guests include David Grier, Tony Furtado, Matt Flinner and Sally Van
Meterto name a fewwith harmony singing by Judith Edelman
